Today marks the 249th anniversary of the signing of the US Declaration of Independence. We are on the verge of celebrating the 250th, a quarter of a century. People everywhere are celebrating with family and friends, picnics and fireworks, food and fun. It’s a moment to reflect and to be mindful.

While the celebrations are ongoing, it’s also a good time to reflect on the events that preceded the creation of a new country. The events of the Salem Witch Hunts set a precedent that led to the establishment of legal frameworks that many Americans take for granted today. For example, limitations placed on the use of hearsay evidence in court, the concept of innocence until proven guilty, the provision of defense counsel are all examples of changed thinking and lessons learned from the Trials in 1692.

Changes to legal thought and process are part of the fabric of democracy. At our own moment in time, in 2025, a number of legal provisions are in the process of being overturned by the federal government. Yesterday, narrow Congressional votes paved the way for sweeping changes to immigration, decreased support for health care and clean energy, and increased tax cuts as well as the national debt by up to $5 trillion (close to $15,000/citizen). Some people will be very happy. Others less so.

How these recent changes will impact education has yet to be revealed, but the passing of the bill the day before the US Independence Day does remind all of us that celebrations of the day are rooted in civic leadership, participation and ultimately civic education. Remembering the power of North Andover Middle School’s civic education class’ work to uphold certain unalienable rights that we value and take for granted should also remind us of why the festivities of the day take place. Let’s make Independence Day a day of Independent Thinking.

Happy Birthday, America!
