This weekend marks the 157th year that Memorial Day has been celebrated in the United States. Initially Memorial Day was called Decoration Day. It was named to honor Union soldiers who had died in the American Civil War and grew to become a national celebration.
The American Civil War was at its core a battle over the legality of slavery. It marked a turning point in civil and human rights as we know it today. As we know all too well today, with the hindsight of history, those rights are all too fragile and cannot be taken for granted.

As we continue to edit the incredible footage that we have filmed for THE LAST WITCH, the questions of civil rights and all of our responsibility to participate and uphold democracy remain at the forefront of our storytelling. In order to participate, we must have knowledge of how civic society functions so that we can raise legitimate questions and engage appropriately with issues that we stand for because they matter.
Ms. LaPierre’s North Andover Middle School students learned how to stand up for what they believe and how to do it right when they learned how government works and how to persuade the Massachusetts state legislature to exonerate someone who was wrongfully convicted, yet forgotten by history. They stood up for their beliefs and did the right thing.

This Memorial Weekend, remember our civic responsibility to engage. Consider what society you personally and individually want to live in. Share your thoughts and actions with others.
We are taking action by telling the story of THE LAST WITCH. Please join us and do the same.
