THE LAST WITCH believes in DEMOCRACY

This is BIG. Our documentary, THE LAST WITCH, is desperately needed in the world today. We have a message about education and civic action that must not be overlooked in a world where democracy seems threatened - and you need to be a part of making sure that our combined voices get heard.

November 2024 has, so far, left many of us in a whirl. The elections at the beginning of the month left some people cheering while many others felt depressed and worried about the future. A lot of women are concerned about the impact of the results on their rights while others are wondering why so many people voted the way that they did. And yet, the results are clear.

The United States will have a new (returning) president whose upcoming agenda is already clear in his choices for members of his new government. To some, that almost appears to be a surprise. It shouldn’t be. Past historical events teach us a lot about future results - if we listen. The impact will be global.

Current events have historical roots. That is why THE LAST WITCH is so important. This is the lesson that the middle school students learned and have to teach us. It is critical that we finish the film so that we can share their story with the world – and with your help and the support of others (individuals and businesses), we can do that in time for the 2026 midterm elections.

If we want to avoid future witch hunts then we need to be concerned with democracy and know how government and legislature work. The foundation of that knowledge is civic education.

Civic education asks questions such as: What rights do we have, as citizens? What obligations do we carry, as citizens? And what is the relationship between our government and who we are, as citizens?

The Annenberg Public Policy Center reports that in 2022, the year that Elizabeth JohnsonJr finally was exonerated from her conviction as a “detestable witch”, less than half of US adults could name all three branches of government. The American Bar Association tells us that, in 2022, only six states required a full year of civic education in high school, and only five states required a dedicated civics class.

THE LAST WITCH reminds us that the Salem Witch Trials did not end until 2022 and that witch hunts still continue around the world – just not in the way that current political discourse would have us believe. Real witch hunts are tantamount to genocides, typically targeting women and those who are different.

That is not a world that I want to live in.
